My first attempt at taxidermy. I chose to do European style mounts (skull and antlers only) in order to emphasize the antlers, contrasting them against the whiteness of the bleached skull.
For the plaques I started with edge-glued 3/4" oak and cut out my template with the jigsaw. I routered the edges, sanded, and used a red mahoghany wood stain. Two coats of polyurethane finished the job.
To clean the skulls I left them to mascerate in soapy water for several months. I degreased the bones with acetone, rinsed, dried, and used a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide to bleach them over several days. Areas of antler affected by the peroxide were brought back to natural color with wood stain.
------------------------------------------------------------------------- I took both deer with my .30-06 rifle, in different seasons. No meat was wasted, providing food for my family and friends. Hides were donated to a local leather worker.
