I have always been interested in medieval elements and it's a little surprising that I waited so long to make a "sword & sorcery" piece. I started with the helmet and decided that a Viking theme would be fun and a partial tribute to Minnesota football.
For the background I decided that cool tones would be soothing to the viewer's eye after being drawn initially to the bright metal colors.
The snow and ice proved to be a natural setting for the ice palace entrance (I had meant to make a collage incorporating an ice palace for some time), and perhaps another reference to Minnesota and our winter carnival.
Another subject I wanted to depict was that of ravens. I had already fabricated a couple but couldn't find an appropriate context. Then I remembered my Norse mythology.
Odin, the chief Norse god, is usually depicted as being accompanied by a pair of ravens called, "Huginn" and, "Muninn", meaning Thought and Memory. According to Viking myth they travel great distances and upon returning Odin knows all they have seen and heard.
------------------------------------------------------------------------ Some materials used in this work were derived from various magazine sources, perhaps including, but not exclusive to; National Geographic, National Geographic Travel, Architectural Digest, Outside, Smithsonian, In Style, Playboy, Transworld, Reader's Digest, Sailing, Sports Illustrated, Field & Stream, Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Skateboarder, American Hunter, and American Rifleman.
I have altered, rearranged, and transformed the fragments of photographs and advertisements published in these magazines in a way inconsistent with their original context, focus, and arrangement, so that any derivative use qualifies as de minimus, and therefore does not infringe on any copyright. Additionally, some elements may have been appropriated and recontextualized, qualifying as fair use.
Cool! I love all of the depth and the different sort of layers and levels! Awesome job! Also, something that is cool, is that the concept is never obvious, which means that each person can see it differently, and in a unique way inside of your own sort of unique idea! I thought that was really cool! Awesome work!

"My beloved, It's not "I could die for you" but rather I've decided "I'll live for you." Even if we were to be born again, because I would be this me, And you will be that you. And I will say this again, always, always."
This is impressive. I've seen a lot of Norse-themed art, but this is by far the most innovative. Also, the shield, helmet, and sword remind me of something out of Conan the Barbarian ("...to crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women...").
Excellent work.
